Yesterday we attended a birthday party for one of our neighbors. The little girl, B, is a huge Elmo and Big Bird fan. The party had an Elmo theme, and guess who else attended?
When we told Little Man that Big Bird would be there, he wondered "How will he fly to B's house? His wings are too small!" So the Dearest had to explain that Big Bird is like the dodo and can fly even with small wings. Technically incorrect, but LM was ok with that.
The characters were a little late because they had dressed up and gone to the wrong house. We had a laugh over that- can you imagine opening your door and seeing Elmo and Big Bird standing there? Especially if you don't have kids?
Surprisingly, most of the little ones at the party were pretty happy to hang out with the characters. Usually kids this age don't much like huge furry creatures. To tell the truth, they kind of creep me out- especially when the person in the costume looks at you thru Big Bird's beak. The characters made lots of balloons and did some magic tricks to entertain the kids.
Monkey Boy wasn't so sure about Elmo:
Little Man was pretty excited to play with the balloons and hang out with Big Bird. Then about halfway thru the party he came up to me and said he had something to tell me. He whispered in my ear, "Mommy, Big Bird isn't real."
"How do you know that?" I asked.
"'Cuz he's wearing a watch and the real Big Bird doesn't wear a watch."
Astute observation, no?
Just a couple more photos:
